Two men found guilty of terrorism charges in a plot to derail a VIA Rail train, have been sentenced to life in prison.

Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser were convicted in March on a total of eight charges between them. The Toronto judge who presided over their trial found both men have not renounced their extremist beliefs, have not expressed remorse, and present questionable prospects for rehabilitation.

Crown lawyers had asked for life sentences for both men.

The two were recorded talking about terror plots they would carry out, in retaliation for Canada’s military actions in muslim countries. The plan included the derailment of a VIA Rail train between New York and Toronto and the murder of wealthy Canadian jews.

Crown attorney Croft Michelson weighed in on the decision and Esseghaier’s appointed lawyer explained how he hopes he receives treatment for mental illness, despite the fact that he disagrees with the psychiatric assessment.
