Train derailment in Port Colborne causes large wheat spill

First Published:

Police in Niagara are investigating after a train partially derailed in Port Colborne over the weekend, causing a large wheat spill.

Multiple reports about the train derailment started coming in shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The train was 14 cars long but only the last three hopper-style cars lost their grip on the track and tipped over near Main St. West, approximately 100 meters east of King St.

The train’s engineer was not injured as a result of the derailment and there are no reported injuries from members of the public.

The cars were carrying Ontario wheat on their way from the Sugarloaf Mill to the Robinhood Mill.

Police say the wheat partially spilled into a privately owned parking lot (Image courtesy/Niagara Regional Police).

After the Ministry of Environment determined that the spill did not pose any environmental concerns, vacuum trucks were called in to clean up the scene.

Police have been in contact with Transport Canada and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident, saying there is no indication that the train tracks had been tampered with.
