The latest on the Province’s new education budget

First Published:

Will Ontario teachers lose their jobs in the face of funding cuts to education? The government says no, but the unions say yes.

The provincial government says the pink slips going out to teachers around the province are part of the normal procedure, but school boards are having to make plans without yet knowing how much funding they’ll get from the province. The Hamilton public board voted on a budget on Monday.

Some of those jobs may be saved once the board gets funding from the province, but board chair Alex Johnstone says some positions will be cut. She says this is not the normal annual process.

Earlier this week, the Hamilton Catholic Board reported that it handed out 42 pink slips to teachers in anticipation of the budget cuts. The government says the school boards will get their final funding numbers by April 29th.
