St. Catharines woman arrested for arson

First Published:

Police say 55-year-old Janet Margaret Maclean of St. Catharines is responsible for at least seven car arsons since May.

It was on July 10th, 2019 police say Maclean was arrested near Lake and Beech streets. They spotted a woman walking away in an area of St. Catharines that has been victimized by car fires in recent months.

One resident has said that he found an improvised tinderbox under one of the cars that was targetted. Police say the accused would use whatever they could find to light on fire and destroy vehicles.

While no one was injured in these fires there were concerns that the situation would escalate. Police say since last year there have been more than ten car fires in the residential area and police claim Maclean is tied to at least seven fires over the last three months.

While the motive is still unclear investigators say they are confident Maclean was acting alone. Maclean will be attending a bail hearing in St Catharines.
