St. Catharines modular homes project to open on Monday

First Published:

A new project to give homes to the homeless was on display on Friday in St. Catharines, as they prepared to open their doors on Monday.

The project was made with modular homes that used to function as camps for oil sands workers in Alberta before making their way to Riordon Street in St. Catharines.

The site has 46 rooms, including some reserved for couples or adult families. The homes will house between 55 to 60 people once they open next week.

The homes will stay for two years while the city continues working on more permanent solutions to the housing crisis.

Manager of homelessness operations in Niagara, Nicole Cortese, says because space in the shelters is limited they will prioritize people, who are currently living in their provided housing and those from encampments on Gale Street and Richard Pear Point Park near Riordon Street.

Cortese also says the move-in process will be a staggard intake process beginning on Monday to support individuals from the two locations in accessing the services available at the new location, but suspects the modular homes will be full by Tuesday.
