Six Nations reduces non-resident traffic over COVID-19 concerns

First Published:

A First Nation community in Ontario is implementing new restrictions after it reported its first cases of COVID-19.

Two people are currently self-isolating on the Six Nations of The Grand River after testing positive for the virus.

Elected chief Mark Hill says they’re setting up checkpoints at the reserve’s boundaries to limit the flow of people coming in and out.

The reserve will have manned entry points where community members can enter and exit. Visitors will be asked to respect the community’s decision and peacefully leave if they are coming to the territory for only recreational or shopping purposes.

According to a post on the Six Nations of the Grand River Facebook page, he reserve will also be asking all non-essential businesses to shut down operations.

“Please keep in mind, we are taking such action to reduce community transmission which happens when people come in close contact with one another,” states the post.
