Sir John A. Macdonald statue in Hamilton vandalized with red paint

The statue of Sir John A. Macdonald in downtown Hamilton has been vandalized again.

Hand prints in red paint appeared at the base of the statue, which is in Gore Park, overnight.

It’s not the first time it has been vandalized and there have been previous calls for the city to remove it.

Those calls have intensified this year, following the discovery of hundreds of children’s remains outside three former residential schools in Canada.

The Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion has started a petition to call on city council to remove the statue.

Councillors are set to discuss the issue next month.

Macdonald was Canada’s first prime minister and key in the creation of the residential school system.
