An order has been issued to revoke the license of the Rosslyn Retirement Residence in Hamilton.

The Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority says it looked at inspections, complaints and reports from staff and the public to make the decision.

The home is not able to re-admit current residents or admit any new residents during the revocation process.

Owners can appeal the order to the Licence Appeal Tribunal and may also apply for a stay of the order.

Last month, 86 people including 64 residents and 22 staff members tested positive for COVID-19, making it the worst outbreak in Hamilton.

Fourteen of the residents have since died.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath wants Hamilton Police to investigate the home and any other retirement homes operated by the same owners.

“With these new revelations of how terribly bad the neglect of our loved ones has been, I believe the Rosslyn Retirement Home warrants further investigation,” said Horwath in a letter to Hamilton Police Chief Eric Girt.

Police were already investigating after discovering that one senior was left behind when the facility was evacuated on May 15.

The facility is owned by members of the Martino families. They also operate other care facilities in Hamilton and Niagara Falls.

Meanwhile, the regulatory body says it is working with the city and other community resources to support residents as they consider alternate housing options.

Financial support has been made available to Rosslyn residents through the RHRA’s Emergency Fund.
