OPP officer injured after being struck with baseball bat

First Published:

A 33-year-old man is facing charges after an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was hit with a baseball bat.

On Friday, police were initially responding to a call on Carling St. in Huron County about someone setting off fireworks in the neighbourhood.

When officers arrived, they received another call from the same person about an unrelated issue.

Police went to the caller’s home but he refused to speak with them. Officers then called the man and asked him to come outside so they could get some more information.

“The resident then immediately opened his door and charged out of his residence at the two responding officers,” said OPP in a news release. “The accused then swung a baseball bat at the one officer striking the officer in the arm causing a minor injury.”

The man ran back into the home and barricaded himself inside. After roughly an hour, the man surrendered to police without incident.

He has been charged with assault a peace officer with a weapon and is scheduled to appear in court on August 12.
