New 2022 health trends and how to follow them

First Published:

Looking for a fresh start when it comes to food? Registered dietitian Michelle Jaelin takes a look at 2022’s new health trends, and the science based tips for following them.

Back to Basics

Jaelin says going back to basics refers to fruits and vegetables, whole grains and protein. She says canned versions of these goods are just as good.

“The reason [I’m recommending canned food] is because food prices are supposed to go up this year with the average family expecting to pay $1000 more for groceries this year,” said Jaelin.

She says you don’t have to buy foods that say they are organic, but that canned and frozen foods are just as healthy.

Gut Health Foods

Jaelin says postbiotics are the waste products that are left behind in the gut after consumption of postbiotics. She recommends feeding your gut with high fibre foods.

She recommends beans, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and fermented foods such as miso, probiotic yogurt or kimchi.

Boozeless Cocktails

For all the people trying dry January, Jaelin has a boozeless cocktail recipe. She uses non-alcoholic spirits to give you the closest mocktail. She recommends something as simple as orange juice, non-alcoholic spirit and sparkling water.

Jaelin says an additional trend she is following is plant-based 3.0. She makes herself aware of foods which aren’t healthy, even though they are plant-based. She recommends looking at food labels to make sure the amount of calories, protein and sugar is at the level that is best for your health.

She says not to focus too much on calories. Instead, focus on the amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, then balance your plate.
