It’s a unique way to raise awareness of extreme poverty. Starting next week, the organization ‘Live below the Line’ is asking people to try getting by on what the extreme poor survive on. That’s $1.75 a day, based on calculations by the United Nations, that’s the Canadian equivalent to extreme poverty. And by taking part, you can get a small taste of what it’s live like the extreme poor in places like in India, China and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The challenge is five days of eating and drinking on $1.75 per day. No coffee at work, no freebies from friends. A total of $8.75.

CHCH Health and Lifestyle reporter Elise Copps signed up to see how far that will stretch. Even when you choose basics like lentils, rice and oats the money doesn’t go far.
