It’s the day after the U.S. Presidential election and Donald Trump is returning to the White House as the 47th president. For reaction we welcomed Bruce Heyman, who was the U.S. Ambassador to Canada under Barack Obama.

The former U.S. Ambassador to Canada is “surprised that the former president came through in the way he did. The numbers are resounding”. But the “American people have spoken and we have to respect the election.”

The Trump campaign was focused on issues surrounding the American people, such as immigration and the border, as well as inflation and the wars around the world, and that might be why the Republicans had a clean sweep- winning the Senate, the presidency and possibly the House.

When it comes to the Democratic Party and Kamala Harris, Heyman thinks they have a lot of reflecting to do, and it’s time to move to the next generation of leaders.

When asked if there were any positives to take away, Heyman had this to say.

“There’s always positives. You take moments like this, sometimes these broad shakeups take place…and I think in a post-pandemic world there’s been a lot of work that has been done historically of after pandemics governments fall and change. This is a time that we can relook at everything and figure out did we go too far on some things?”
