Education about antibiotics

Researchers at Laval University in Quebec are educating patients and doctors about antibiotics.

Experts say a tutorial program that helps doctors explain the risks and benefits of antibiotics can lower the number of patients requesting the drugs for respiratory infections.

The majority of respiratory illnesses are viral, and don’t respond to antibiotics, but many patients continue to ask for the medication.

Researchers found the program significantly reduces antibiotic use.
