5 ways to boost energy and flow in your home

Many people kick off the new year wondering what the latest interior design trends are and how they can incorporate them into their home.

Rather than spending a lot of money or undergoing a major renovation, designer Cheryl Torrenueva says to make small changes that leave you feeling better in your own space.

Torrenueva joined Bob Cowan on Morning Live with five simple tips to boost the energy and flow in your house to help you feel more positive.

Remove Obstacles

The first way you can increase the energy and flow in your home is by decluttering.

Torrenueva recommended taking a look at your daily path as you move through your space.

“Do you wake up and have to deal with physical obstacles?” she asked. “Perhaps it’s clothes on the floor or your children’s toys or a junk drawer that gives you anxiety all the time.”

You can get rid of these obstacles by taking the time to put items back where they belong and using baskets or trays to organize things.

Increase Space Between Furniture

A common mistake Torrenueva notices in homes is furniture pushed right against the wall.

“Pull your furniture pieces like sofas and chairs at least six feet from the wall,” she said.

Another tip is to keep two to three feet between large pieces of furniture such as coffee or dining tables in order to create a clear path.

The Commanding Position

Another interior design error Torrenueva often sees is a desk facing a wall or window.

“This can leave you feeling blocked or uneasy,” she said. “This is a reflection of how you position yourself in life.”

Simply move your bed or desk to face the door, but not directly in line with it.

“You’ll instantly feel like you’re in command of your life,” Torrenueva said. “You’re ready to receive positive energy and the best opportunities.”

Light Up Your Space

Canadian winters can be long, dark and gloomy so it is important to find ways to increase your exposure to warm-toned lights.

While natural light is the most ideal, LED light therapy and Himalayan salt lamps are great options too.

Studies show that LED light therapy lamps can help you overcome fatigue, reset your sleep cycle and boost your mood. Torrenueva recommended using this light for at least 20 minutes every day.

At night, Himalayan salt lamps can be used to provide a calming effect, promote relaxation and remove stagnant energy.

Add Life to Your Space with Plants

The final tip for boosting energy and flow in your home is to have real plants and flowers.

“Plants radiate harmonious energy and they also remove toxins from the air in your home,” Torrenueva said.

When choosing your plants, she said to keep their shape in mind as that can also affect your energy.

“Looking at a plant that has pointy leaves may not be as relaxing as another plant that has a softer, more organic shape to it like fiddle leaf figs or jade plants,” she said.
