5 heart-healthy food swaps to keep you in top shape

It’s the month of love and Naturopathic Doctor Joyce Johnson joined us this morning with some heart-healthy food swaps to help take care of our hearts.
1. Hummus over mayonnaise – swap out your mayo and replace it with something healthier such as hummus, mashed avocado, Greek yogurt or even pesto
2. Fatty fish over fatty beef – cold water fatty fish such as salmon and tuna contain Omega-3s, which can help lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots.
3. Nuts over chips – chips and pretzels and other such snacks are very high in sodium. Curb that salty craving with a handful of nuts and you’ll get a dose of fibre and heart-healthy unsaturated fat.
4. Dark chocolate over sweet treats – sugary treats are often high in trans-fats. To satisfy your sweet-tooth, reach for a piece of dark chocolate instead. Dark chocolate can help lower blood pressure and improve blood vessel function.
5. Green side dishes over white side dishes – scratch starch rich sides like potatoes, rice, noodles and bread and replace them with green veggies such as kale, broccoli and spinach to help lower high cholesterol
