3 easy zero-waste Christmas gifts and decorations

While the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year, it is also the most wasteful time of the year.
According to Zero Waste Canada, Canadians will throw out 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and gift bags this Christmas.
“To put that into perspective, that’s about the weight of four and a half CN Towers,” said Julia Grieve in an interview on Morning Live on Friday.
Grieve, who is also the founder of Preloved, shared three simple tips on how to create less waste this holiday season.
Zero-Waste Gifts
The first way you can reduce your amount of waste this Christmas is to give second-hand gifts.
“We need to normalize this idea of re-gifting, especially this year with supply chain issues,” Grieve said.
She said her go-to second-hand presents are high-quality crystal glasses, decanters and martini shakers.
Zero-Waste Wrapping
Other ways to limit waste this year are to avoid using paper and to make the gift wrap a part of the present.
Grieve recommends using reusable produce bags and kitchen clothes, which are compostable and biodegradable.
Zero-Waste Decorations
Her final zero-waste tip is to create a centrepiece using real fruit, nuts and greenery.
“I wanted to make a centrepiece that was edible, compostable, biodegradable and recyclable,” Grieve said.
