Market Value

In an unique attempt to showcase the work they do, Hamilton artists are holding demonstrations this week at the Hamilton Farmers’ Market.

Throughout the six-day event entitled Market Value, visitors to the market will see artists from Hamilton and the area actively engaged in the everyday labour it takes to create their art. The project is an attempt to draw attention to the hours artists commit to making art, often invisibly and without compensation.

Stephanie Vegh of the Hamilton Arts Council says Market Value is a collaboration with the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre.

“We’ve invited six artists to come here over six different days. Instead of making their work in a studio. they are making their work here in a public setting so people can see exactly what goes into making art, what the work involved looks like, and be able to ask the artist questions about what the process is.”

The artists participating in Market Value represent a range of artistic practices in a variety of media. They will demonstrate many different working methods during their appearance at the market.
