Idea from two Hamilton ultrasound technologists results in the creation of extended face shields

First Published:

Personal protection equipment has proven to be a vital tool in the fight against COVID-19.

Hamilton Health Sciences has developed an extended face shield with McMaster University to ensure optimum safety.

Due to the nature of ultrasound imaging, the regular shields left the sides of the technologist’s face and neck exposed.

That’s when ultrasound technologists Lisa Billone and Sarah Allred came up with the idea of extended face shields.

The hospital reached out to McMaster’s manufacturing research institute for their  engineering expertise. The idea was met with an enthusiastic yes.

After a few weeks of developing, designing, and creating the prototype, it was complete and ready for approval.

Ultrasound technologists across HHS have now been using the face shields since November.
