Hamilton public health declares COVID-19 outbreak at bakery

First Published:

Hamilton public health is reporting a workplace COVID-19 outbreak at a bakery in rural Ancaster.

Public health says 15 staff members from the Aryzta/Oakrun Farm Bakery on Fiddlers Green Rd. have tested positive for the virus.

It’s unclear if the infected employees work inside the bakery or in the on-site retail store.

The outbreak, which was declared on Monday, is one of 47 outbreaks currently reported in the city.

There is also an outbreak at ArcelorMittal Dofasco – 2 CPCM roll shop with three staff cases. This outbreak has screened positive for a variant of concern.

On Monday, outbreaks were also declared at Cootes Paradise Elementary School and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School.

Meanwhile, Cargill has temporarily closed its chicken processing plant in London because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

There are 82 active cases in the plant, which employs 900 people.

Cargill says it’s temporarily closing the facility out of an abundance of caution. Employees will get a weekly guarantee of 36-hours pay.

The company says it is working closely with public health officials to ensure appropriate prevention, testing and cleaning in its facilities and that employees are following quarantine protocols at home.
