A Hamilton man accused of killing his girlfriend and then fleeing to Texas appears in court

First Published:

The Hamilton man accused of killing 22-year-old Melinda Vasilije last April, appeared in a Kitchener courtroom today. 24-year-old Ager Hasan had been on the run since the incident, he was arrested in San Antonio, Texas in July and was extradited on Friday.

Melinda Vasilije was found dead in her apartment with multiple stab wounds to her throat and chest. Police have video of her ex-boyfriend Ager Hasan leaving the apartment at around 2 in the morning. He fled the country but stayed active on social media explaining how it happened. He wrote “I go up to her and try and give her a hug, almost out of no where she grabs a knife by the sink.” “I tried grabbing the knife, but ended up cutting my hands. Out of shock and fear, I grab one. I hit her with it, almost blindly. A few times. I didn’t know what happened. I was confused, shocked and scared.”

Court documents say Vasilije was stabbed more than 30 times.

Hasan appeared in court briefly Monday morning. Melinda’s family and friends were in court and were visibly upset. “They’re absolutely devastated, her mom is going crazy, any mom would.”

He will remain in custody and was told by the judge not to contact a list of more than 20 people, to which he replied “I don’t know half of those people.”

Hasan will be represented by Hamilton lawyer Jason Little. CHCH reached out to him and he said, “At this time there’s no comment. It’s too early, he was just arrested. I haven’t received disclosure from the crown yet.”

Ager Hasan will appear again by video on January 15th.
