Halton Police lay careless driving charge in death of activist Regan Russell

First Published:

A truck driver has been charged in the death of an animal rights activist in Burlington last month.

Regan Russell was struck by a transport truck outside the Sofina Foods facility at Harvester Rd. and Appleby Line on June 19.

The 65-year-old was with a group of people giving water to pigs being brought into the plant when she was hit.

A vigil was held for Russell days after her death.

Halton Police say they interviewed witnesses and looked at evidence and video footage of the incident.

A 28-year-old man from North Perth has been charged with careless driving causing death under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police say there is no evidence to indicate this was an intentional act or that a criminal offence was committed.

“We are disappointed by the lack of criminal charges,” Russell’s family said in a statement.

The Animal Save Movement says the charges “do not amount to justice for Regan.”

They are planning a rally at Halton Police headquarters on Tuesday morning.
