Skipperi Canada general manager Keven Dextradeur said, “The mission of Skipperi is really to democratize the boating world, making it a lot more accessible, a lot cheaper also to enter the space.”
Skipperi is a Finland-based startup that launched the service in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton on May 1 with 40 boats available in Canada.
Those interested must have a boating licence, go through practical training, and pay for a monthly membership.
Skipperi memberships start at $500 per month and Dextradeur says, “You only pay during the boating season, so the boating season for us is from May 1st to October 31st, but you essentially pay prorated from your start date.”

The base subscription gets you unlimited boating from Monday to Friday using a fully equipped StarCraft SVX deck boat.
Skipperi says it gets new boats, every year. The company says its service is designed for people who don’t want to commit to buying and maintaining a boat of their own.
“We take care of everything, winterization, maintenance, storage, we give you one on one practical training with a licensed captain. We essentially take care of all the hassle of owning your own boat, so people can just enjoy the fun part of boating,” Dextradeur said.
Skipperi says around 125 people in Canada are waiting for their practical training in order to become members and demand is growing. Skipperi says it plans to expand from two to four boats at Harbour West Marina by mid-July.
