No strike Monday as City of Hamilton, unionized workers reach tentative agreement
The City of Hamilton’s largest union, CUPE Local 5167, announced late Friday evening that it has reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with the City.
The union and the city had been bargaining since Feb. 6 and 3,200 workers were in a legal strike position as of this Monday.

The City announced a tentative deal has been reached between the union and city workers, meaning strike action would be called off as the union awaits a vote for ratification by its members.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside of City Hall on Wednesday, pushing for the city to reach a deal as the potential strike loomed.
A strike by city workers would have seen impacts in all city-run services including city-run child care, parks and recreation, garbage pick-up, road work and bylaw enforcement among others.

Mayor Andrea Horwath addressed the tentative deal in a social media post Sunday night saying, “Our employees are vital to the city’s success – this agreement reflects our commitment to supporting their contributions + our commitment to fiscal responsibility.”
The union says information sessions and details on the vote will be circulated this week.
