Woman severely burned in Niagara Falls apartment fire

A woman is in hospital with severe burns sustained in a late afternoon fire at an apartment in Niagara Falls on Monday.
The Niagara Falls fire department was called out just before 6 p.m. to Laura Secord Apartments at 5611 Valley Way.
Upon arrival fire crews saw black smoke at the top of the three-storey building.
Crews evacuated the building and made their way to the second floor where they rescued a 75-year-old woman who had severe burns to her back.
Niagara Fire say that crews successfully put out the blaze in the unit with minimal damage to the corridor.
The victim was transported to Greater Niagara General where she remains in hospital. An update on her condition is not yet known.
A regional transit bus was arranged for the apartment residents to stay in while the building was ventilated to safe levels before they re-entered it.
Estimated damages to the apartment are not yet known.
