Woman dies, child in hospital after being pulled from Oakville pool

A 79-year-old woman is dead and her four-year-old granddaughter is in critical condition after they were pulled from a pool in Oakville.

Halton police responded to a 911 call at a home on Yarmouth Cres. shortly after noon on Wednesday.

The caller said an elderly woman and a child were found face down in the family’s backyard pool.

Police say a neighbour pulled out the woman and the child’s mother rescued the four-year-old girl.

The child regained consciousness before police arrived on scene. She was transported via air ambulance to McMaster’s Children’s Hospital in Hamilton where she remains in critical condition.

Emergency crews performed CPR on the child’s grandmother however she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The Coroner’s office has taken over the case and Halton police say they will not be making any further comments at this time.
