With the imminent arrival of winter and Christmas, many folks are waiting for snow. But, it’s not to be…at least not yet.

Many people are enjoying the nice weather we are having, but there are places across Ontario and the city where having no snowfall at all is doing more harm for some than good.

With the forecast calling for highs above the freezing mark, the lack of winter-like weather has some of parts Ontario feeling less than festive. At a popular hamilton public ice-rink, half is ice, half water.

Vince Bryent, a long-time handyman with the Hamilton Waterfront Trust says this weather is rare and it’s hard to maintain the rink.

“A lot of people have come down with their skates all ready to go on the ice. It’s kind of a shock to them that no one’s out here yet.”

And it’s affecting plenty of areas in Ontario. Glen Eden ski resort in Milton is still not open. In fact, only two ski resorts are open province-wide. One in Huntsville and one near Ottawa.

Businesses who thrive on the winter season are finding themselves in a bit of a slump too.

“We recently had a Black Friday sale where we didn’t move as much stuff as we would’ve liked to.” says Dustin Hayward from McMaster Sports.

But it’s not as bad as you might think. Business for snowboards and winter tires are slow right now.

“Obviously they’re not coming in as fast and in such a hurry right now. But come the first snowfall, they’ll be jammed right back up.” said Ben Hegedus-Wylkin, Automotive parts manager at Canadian Tire.

But, Christmas lights are flying off the shelves. People can still put them up in the warmth.

The unseasonably warmer weather may be affecting some businesses and is preventing usual winter activities, but for the most part people are embracing the warmer temperatures.

Snow may be on the way, but for now, the sun still shines bright.

It’s anyone’s guess when snow may actually come, but in the meantime it looks like people are certainly enjoying it while they can.
