What’s open, closed New Year’s Day in Hamilton, Halton, Niagara

Many services and stores may be closed on Sunday since New Year’s Day is a public holiday in Ontario.

When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it may be applied to the next business day as well.

Here’s what’s open and closed in Hamilton on New Year’s Day:

CLOSED

  • Banks, government offices and post offices
  • LCBO locations are closed
  • All Hamilton libraries and museums are closed
  • The Farmers’ Market is closed
  • Most major shopping centres are closed
  • Administrative offices will be closed
  • Animal services office and shelter will be closed
  • Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse in Hamilton will be closed
  • Art Gallery of Hamilton will be closed
  • All recreation centres, seniors centres and arenas in Hamilton will be closed
  • There will be no transit service in Welland and Fort Erie

OPEN

  • Public transit in Hamilton and Halton will operate on a Sunday schedule
  • There is no change to garbage, green bin and recycling collection during the week
  • Public transit in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls will operate on a holiday schedule
  • GO Transit trains and buses will run on a Sunday schedule
  • Some Beer Store locations are open
  • Outlet Collection at Niagara and CF Toronto Eaton Centre will be open
  • Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Outdoor pools, splash pads and playgrounds
