WestJet flight attendants reach tentative agreement

The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet have reached a tentative agreement on Monday, ending operational disruptions.

“We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that reflects the hard work and professionalism of our cabin crew,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, CEO of WestJet.

“We know this disruption has been frustrating for our guests and WestJetters and we’re sorry for that. Our teams are working hard to restore service and get our guests on their way to their destinations as quickly as possible and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we get back to normal.”

This comes after thousands of WestJet passengers were scrambling on Sunday to make new travel plans after the airline’s flight attendants officially went on strike.

Flights were cancelled across the country including at Toronto Pearson after last-minute contract talks failed to produce a deal.

Union members walked off the job to demand higher pay, fairer schedules and an improved work-life balance.

Now, this tentative agreement brings an end to the work stoppage and network-wide operational disruption, with both the strike and lockout notices being withdrawn.

“We are glad the parties found a path forward before the disruption caused even greater harm. This episode is nevertheless another reminder that Canada needs a stronger labour relations framework to prevent repeated shutdowns of major transportation infrastructure,” said Pascal Chan, vice president of strategic policy and supply chains for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

The tentative deal is subject to a ratification vote by WestJet cabin crew.

On Monday, it is unclear as to when the airline would be able to resume its normal operations and schedule, but WestJet said in a separate news release that it would share details once they become available.
