A number of Welland residents were forced out of their homes after an apartment fire last night.

Welland fire crews were called to King Street near Lincoln Street around 6:30 p.m. to find heavy black smoke on the ninth floor, which reportedly spread down to the seventh floor.

A CHCH News freelancer says three people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, but this has not been confirmed.

A second-floor apartment fire in Welland on Sept. 11 also forced some residents out of their units.

This is a developing story — more to come.
