A Most Wanted Man
A Most Wanted Man is a spy thriller based on the novel by John LeCarre, directed by Anton Corbijn (The American). The film follows German and US intelligence officers who rush to investigate the motives of a half-Chechen half-Russian Muslim man who arrives in Hamburg. In town on the pretence of claiming his father’s inheritance, the intelligence operatives race to establish if this man’s story is legitimate or a cover-up for ulterior motives. The film stars Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Daniel Brühl, Nina Hoss, Robin Wright, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in his last completed role.
During production of A Most Wanted Man, Corbijn had no idea he would be capturing the final performance of the late Hoffman. In his director’s statement for the film’s promotional material, he lauded the actor. “It is unlikely I can do him justice with my writing but I like to think I did him justice in the film we made, where he is outstanding, and deserving of all our attention. I know he was extremely proud of it and we were talking about working together again when we met two weeks ago. As he put it: “I hope we get to do this again on another film. We know more now and I feel we’d fight well together and be unshakeable, and that’s exciting.” Alas, it will never be and that makes the end of our film even harder to watch.
A Most Wanted Man is rated 14A.
