Hamilton Stadium was busy Wednesday as volunteers gathered to prepare food hampers for Hamilton and Halton families who are experiencing food insecurity this Thanksgiving season.

Around 175 volunteers were on hand to work alongside the Good Shepherd in packing food.

The event is put on by Sodexo Canada – a sustainable food service that works with local communities and schools and hospitals. This is the eighth edition of the Stop Hunger fundraising and volunteering day.

“Food every day is important, right? It allows you to be able to think better, it allows you to be able to operate. While we’re all going to be with our families over the weekend, it’s important for people that are less fortunate than ourselves to be able to enjoy coming together as a family and have one less thing to worry about,” said Johanne Belanger, CEO of Sodexo Canada.

“There’s a big need across the country and every year it just seems to be getting more and more. And you add the high cost of inflation and all the things that we’re dealing with, and we’re seeing that the not-for-profit organizations are in more desperate need for assistance and support,” said Belanger.

In all, 500 food hampers were packed for the Good Shepherd with each feeding a family of four.
