Video shows smash-and-grab robbery at Hamilton Mountain jewelry store

CHCH News has obtained surveillance video of a smash-and-grab robbery at a jewelry store on Hamilton Mountain overnight Wednesday.

It happened shortly after 3 a.m. at Gold Forever Jewellery on Mohawk Road East, near Upper Wellington Street.

Surveillance video shows two suspects armed with hammers smashing and kicking the front door of the unoccupied jewelry store as a security alarm sounds.

After a failed attempt to break in, the two suspects walk toward a car as it pulls forward. Three other suspects then get out of a second car before its driver crashes through the storefront.

“When they couldn’t get in, they drove a white Honda Civic right through, into the whole store,” said Randy Mathura, the owner of Gold Forever Jewellry and Repair.

The video shows at least six suspects, wearing hooded sweatshirts and face coverings, using hammers to smash glass display cases and steal jewelry.

“They broke all the showcasings, they didn’t get much — we don’t keep a lot of stuff out, but they did carry away a significant amount,” said Mathura. “Still doing inventory, but anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000.”

The jewelry store sustained extensive damage.

The suspects then fled the scene.

Mathura says he has lived in Hamilton all his life, and this incident is a reminder of how things have changed.

“I was five-years-old running around here, now I have a little one running around here, right,” said Mathura. “Canada is not how Canada used to be. 10 years ago I felt a lot safer, now I don’t feel safe anywhere.”

Hamilton police say no arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Investigators are continuing to comb through CCTV footage.

In the meantime, Mathura says he is planning to improve his store’s security.

“Security system — everything is going to get updated and go from there right,”said Mathura, “so hopefully we can prevent that from happening again, or prevent some damages again for next time.”
