The Venezuelan flag consists of a horizontal tricolor of yellow, blue, and red. The colors are derived from the flag of the former Gran Colombia federation, of which Venezuela, along with Colombia and Ecuador, was a member from 1819 to 1830. Unlike the other former members, the width of the stripes on the Venezuelan flag is equal. In the center of the blue stripe, there is an arc composed of eight five-pointed stars, and on the upper left side, the flag bears a coat of arms (in the case of the national flag). The stars represent the seven Venezuelan provinces that signed an agreement with the dissolution of Gran Colombia. The eighth star, added to the flag in 2006, is supposed to represent the Esequiba province, located in Guyana's territory, which Venezuela claims.

VIDEO: Venezuelans searched for survivors beneath collapsed buildings and rescue teams raced to the areas hardest hit by a pair of powerful earthquakes that rocked northern Venezuela, killing at least 188 people. The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that hit Wednesday evening were among the strongest in Venezuela in more than a century and could be felt throughout the region. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said authorities were shifting rescue teams from other parts of the country to La Guaira, which she said was one of the hardest-hit areas.
