Unifor targets Ford to set stage for contracts with other Detroit automakers

Unifor says it will use Ford to establish the pattern agreement in its contract talks with the other two Detroit automakers.

The contract negotiations with Ford will be used to guide Unifor’s agreements with General Motors and Fiat-Chrysler on issues such as wages, pensions and benefits.

The talks take place every four years.

They come as Ford employees face expiring product lines in Oakville, while Fiat Chrysler workers have seen shift cuts in Windsor and Brampton.

Unifor is also pushing the Big Three automakers to commit to building new products at Canadian plants, especially electric vehicles.

Workers have voted to support a potential strike if the automaker and union can’t reach a deal by Sept. 21 at 11:59 p.m.
