The United States defeated Canada 2 – 1 in overtime in the women’s hockey final at the Milan Cortina Olympics Thursday.
Canada struck first as Kristen O’Neill scored a short-handed goal early in the second period and took their 1-0 lead into the final frame.
Then, with the clock ticking down in the third period and the American net empty, the Team USA captain Hilary Knight tied it up with two minutes left on the clock.
Megan Keller then secured the overtime win four minutes into overtime.
As a result of the game, the U.S. will get the gold medal, Canada will get silver medal and Switzerland will get the bronze medal in women’s hockey.
School boards in Ontario were directed by the province to allow students to tune into the game, as well as the men’s upcoming semifinal on Friday.
