Two arrested for alleged stabbing on St. Catharines’ Welland Canal Parkway

Niagara police say a taxi driver was stabbed and two people arrested after an incident on the Welland Canal Parkway, south of Glendale Avenue in St. Catharines.

Officers say a man went to the emergency room with stab wounds at around 1:45 a.m.

Investigators determined the man was a taxi driver who had been stabbed by a customer. He is now recovering in hospital after receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The accused were identified shortly after and police discovered the scene and recovered a weapon.

Police do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.

Detectives have charged 29-year-old Daniel Ibarra Vargas of Thorold with aggravated assault and uttering threats.

Officers released the other suspect unconditionally.

The Welland Canal Parkway has since reopened.
