Local sports fixture and son killed in devastating crash in Hagersville
A devastating head-on crash in Hagersville has left a father and son dead.
Friends on social media have identified the victims as Spencer and Don Edwards of Caledonia. Don was a prominent voice in local sports and a commentator on Cable 14.
Spencer Edwards turned 18 years old just last month. On his birthday, his father Don, who was the passenger in the car today, posted a photo of his son playing football; saying how proud he is of the wonderful man Spencer had become.
Don Edwards, 59, was a local sports fixture in the community. He was an active volunteer on Cable 14 for the past 12 years, a colour commentator for AHL and OHL hockey, a football analyst, and he did play-by-play on OUA and high school football games.
Tonight Cable 14 issued a statement to CHCH expressing their condolences to the Edwards family saying Don, “was extraordinarily knowledgeable, witty and possessed a wonderful sense of humour. The Cable 14 family is hurting along with them today.”
Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, OPP responded to the tragic call on Highway 6 at Concession 11 Walpole.
Spencer and Don were driving southbound when their car and a northbound SUV collided.
According to the OPP, “The northbound vehicle is a 27-year-old female and a 1-year-old male. They were transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries.”
There was a third vehicle involved in the collision. It swerved on Highway 6 to avoid the crash and ended up in the ditch. The male driver was not injured.
Don Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene. His son, Spencer, was taken to hospital where he later died.
Now police are looking into the factors that caused the crash.
Some on social media who drove by the scene this morning described torrential rain at the time. Police believe it was a contributing factor.
