Turbo Kid is a futuristic action film written and directed by Quebec filmmakers François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, collectively known as RKSS. The film premiered at Sundance and stars some talented Canadians including Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf, and veteran actor Michael Ironside.
In a post-apocalyptic future, THE KID (Munro Chambers), a young solitary scavenger obsessed with comic books must face his fears and become a reluctant hero when he meets a mysterious girl named APPLE (Laurence Laboeuf). Despite their efforts to keep to themselves, ZEUS (Michael Ironside), the sadistic and self-proclaimed leader of the Wasteland, plagues THE KID and APPLE. Armed with little more than blind faith and an ancient turbocharged weapon, THE KID learns of justice and friendship and embarks on an incredible journey to rid the Wasteland of evil and save the girl of his dreams.
In an interview with the Montreal Gazette, Ironside described how he prefers smaller projects like Turbo Kid to bigger blockbusters. “I don’t make money a priority,” he said. “I try and do at least one blockbuster film a year, or every 18 months; that keeps my distribution up. But they can be bloody boring — big, bloated, over-budgeted projects that are usually remakes of something, things like Terminator 4 (Terminator Salvation). I did that for a s—load of money, so I can go off and choose to do films that are more based on script and the people involved.”
