Trial of man accused in Toronto van attack begins

The trial of the man behind the 2018 deadly van attack in Toronto has begun.
Alek Minassian has admitted to planning and carrying out the attack that killed 10 people and injured 16 others.
His lawyers are expected to raise of defence of being not criminally responsible for his actions.
The judge has said the case will focus on Minassian’s state of mind at the time.
The 28-year-old from Richmond Hill faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder.

The judge-only trial will take place over Zoom.
It won’t be available to the public online but there are rooms reserved at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to watch.
