[projekktor id=’24138′]
Update:
On this international day against homophobia and transphobia, the Trudeau government tabled a bill to extend human rights protections to transgender Canadians.
“Bill C 16 an act to amend the Canadian human rights act and criminal code that will sure that Canadians will be free to identify themselves and express their gender as they wish while being protected against discrimination.” Justice Minister Jody Wilson Raybould.
One Hamilton teenager is relieved to live in this country where he is free to be the boy he always wanted to be. 17 year old Ren is a grade 12 student at Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton. He stopped using his birth name Lauren in highschool. News of the bill brought Ren to tears. The grade 12 student is going to Trent University for archeology next year.
“A big factor in my decision to go there is the fact that they have gender neutral washrooms.”
At Westdale Secondary School they have had a single occupancy washroom for two years. It’s open to all students but it’s here for those who need a gender neutral space. Ren says it’s a good start and today’s bill will help make Canada more inclusive.
The call to action from Trudeau is no surprise. He campaigned on the action before he was elected last year. The PM also confirmed he’ll attend Montreal and Toronto’s pride events this summer which is the first for a PM.
