Transcendence

The directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister, Transcendence stars Johnny Depp as Dr. Will Caster, a brilliant scientist working towards a totally sentient super computer. When he is mortally wounded by a member of an anti-technology revolutionary group, he uploads his consciousness to a computer in order to stay alive. Wally Pfister has been nominated for four Oscars for his cinematography, all on films directed by Christopher Nolan – he won for Inception.

The Dark Knight director is a producer on Transcendence and his touch is evident with Nolan regulars Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy in the cast. The film also stars Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany and Kate Mara. Pfister and Nolan have remained advocates for the use of film stock instead of digital photography, so naturally Trancendence was shot on film. A fitting move for a movie about the dangers of technology. Transcendence reportedly had a budget in the $100 million range, with Johnny Depp making a reported $20 million for his appearance.
