The Northlander is a Canadian science fiction film from Métis writer/director Benjamin Ross Hayden. The film – which has screened at a number of festivals including the Montreal World Film Festival, imagineNATIVE International Film Festival, and the American Indian Film Festival – stars Corey Sevier, Michelle Thrush, Roseanne Supernault, Julian Black Antelope, Nathaniel Arcand.
In the year 2961, the time is after humanity and nature has recovered the land. A hunter named Cygnus is called to rise above his duty. He provides for Last Arc, the once-nomadic band of survivors in need of a hope that is now growing scarce. The answer must be found before a group of outlandish Heretics descend upon them. Cygnus must voyage across the treacherous landscape to defend his people. Sent by Nova, the matriarch of the band, she acts based on her vision for Cygnus to find a seed of hope. The future of Last Arc is for him to discover. Cygnus ventures into a hostile landscape in search of an answer for his people. On this journey of encountering many traps and dangers, Cygnus discovers what has been hunting him is his identity.
In an interview with FREQ Magazine, Hayden spoke about drawing parallels between Canada’s past and the futuristic setting of the film. “The Northlander is a combination of my draw to the past and the future together at once. We can learn much by looking in both directions. Time is a wheel, and history repeats. Indigenous futurism goes in the opposite direction – future narratives conscious of the environment long before us that are spiritual and sustainable. Addressing new alternatives and breaking cycles of conflicts against “the other”, repeating this very moment in our world is why indigenous futurism is important.”
The screening at The Royal on May 27 will feature a live introduction and post-screening Q&A by Hayden and members of the cast.
The Northlander is rated 14A.
