Universal is putting their trust in Tom Cruise to launch their Dark Universe project with The Mummy. Directed by Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us), the film is the first in a planned series looking to retool the classic Universal monsters roster into a connected franchise, as is the norm these days. Starring alongside Cruise are Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, and Russell Crowe.

Thought safely entombed deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Boutella) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

“What we are trying to create here is a texture and tone rooted in the Universal horror classic, while having one foot in the modern age,” explains Kurtzman. “This serves as a nod to these classics, while also bringing these monsters to life in a whole new era for a global audience.”

The Mummy is rated 14A.
