Antoine Fuqua teams up with Denzel Washington once again with The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the 1960 western with a script written by Richard Wenk and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto. It’s the third collaboration between the two, and the film also reunites Washington with his Training Day co-star Ethan Hawke. Also starring in the film are Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, and Peter Sarsgaard.
With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the desperate townspeople, led by Emma Cullen, employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm, Josh Faraday, Goodnight Robicheaux, Jack Horne, Billy Rocks, Vasquez, and Red Harvest. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
Fuqua decided to make his mark on the western remake with his casting choices. “I needed something that you haven’t seen yet, a perspective that has not been on the screen with the Western. So I said, ‘What about Denzel Washington?’ And the room went completely silent – until there was an eruption. ‘That would be amazing. You think he would do it?’”
“Antoine and I have obviously had great success,” says Washington. “We won our Academy Award® with Training Day and had great financial success with The Equalizer. He’s a master filmmaker – he knows what he’s doing and he allows me to do what it is I know how to do. We’re a good fit.”
The Magnificent Seven is rated 14A.
