Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler can add another silly comedy to their lengthy resumes with The House. It’s the directorial debut of Andrew J. Cohen, who co-wrote both Neighbors movies as well as Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. The supporting cast includes Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll, and Jeremy Renner.

When Scott and Kate Johansen’s daughter gets into the college of her dreams it’s cause for celebration. That is, until Scott and Kate (Ferrell and Poehler) learn that the scholarship they were counting on didn’t come through, and they’re now on the hook for tuition they can’t begin to afford. With the help of their friend and neighbor Frank (Mantzoukas)—also in need of a major payday—they decide to open an illegal casino in his suburban house, risking everything together on a Vegas-style bacchanal where money flows, inhibitions are checked at the door, and all bets are off.

“It’s an idea that hit us right away as unique, and combines a lot of the things we love,” says Ferrell, who is also a producer on the film. “Whether you sincerely enjoy Vegas or just love to hate it and make fun of it, think about bringing all of that energy and the potential for bad decisions into a small-town setting where people are looking for a reason to cut loose and let their hair down.”

“This is a comedy about family, but it skates the edge,” adds Poehler. “It’s rated R, and we took full advantage of that. There will be blood.”

The House is rated 14A.
