The Great Race

Two Southern Ontario men are about to embark on the journey of a lifetime, in a 1937 Studebaker Coupe.
They’re taking part in an an annual event called The Great Race, and for the first time in its 35 year history, part of the route will be in Canada.
Sheldon Riers bought his Studebaker in Minnesota ten years ago. Ron Vandermarel spent five years restoring it. They will take on the The Great Race, driving from Buffalo all the way to Halifax. A journey that takes place over 3,800 kilometres.
There are 130 other classics cars also taking part in the race. Some dating all the way back to 1916.
Riers says around 20% of the cars do not finish the race. The event takes place every year. With an grand prize of $150,000, drivers all around the world are taking their marks. Teams must come up with $6,000 to enter.
Ron will be the driver of the team, while Sheldon, the navigator. No maps, GPS or calculator will be allowed during the trip, it’s all driver navigation and following the intructions.
The race begins in Buffalo this Saturday, and will finish in Halifax on Canada Day.
