The 2026 Niagara Falls Spooky Awards are taking place this weekend, with homes and businesses decked out in Halloween decorations as they look to be number one.

For those who compete, it’s a free, outdoor Halloween display competition and last year, a record of 69 properties participated.

“Seven years ago was the first year the Spooky Awards happened and there was a real push from council to get the community together so this great idea came forward. Both at Halloween as well as at Christmas there’s decorating community awards,” says Michelle Nicholls, community recreation coordinator for the City of Niagara.

Nine awards will be presented across three categories including Judges’ Favourite, Best Effects and People’s Choice.

One of the competitors, Rob Foster, has been participating in this contest for about four years. He got two second place finishes last year.

“Each year we get more creative and try to expand it more and love it more,” Foster says.

“It’s quite expensive but it’s worth it. We’re fortunate that we can afford to do this and bring joy to other people.”

In each of the three categories, prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

First-place winners will receive a Spooky Awards trophy and commemorative lawn sign while second and third-place winners will receive a commemorative lawn sign.

From Friday to Sunday, the city is encouraging residents to follow the Spooky Map and tour participating properties across Niagara Falls.

Displays will be lit each night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Public voting for the People’s Choice Award will be open from Friday to Sunday.
