Testament of Youth is a wartime drama directed by James Kent. It is based on the memoir of the same name by Vera Brittain, a young woman who left Oxford University to become a war nurse. The film stars Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Colin Morgan, Emily Watson, Hayley Atwell, Dominic West, and Miranda Richardson.
Testament of Youth is a powerful story of love, war and remembrance, based on the First World War memoir by Vera Brittain, which has become the classic testimony of that war from a woman’s point of view. A searing journey from youthful hopes and dreams to the edge of despair and back again, it’s a film about young love, the futility of war and how to make sense of the darkest times.
Testament of Youth is James Kent’s feature film debut, but he brought his experience in other mediums to the project. “I’d never directed a feature film before and prior to this I was making documentaries and television dramas. But I was approached by Rosie Alison, the producer of the film and I think what Rosie saw in my work was a synthesis, a kind of coming together of documentary and drama. As a director I’ve always been drawn to real stories and to the authenticity of a real event. I think it makes great drama. I’d directed a number of stories about strong women, often anchored in the past, because I find that women are often pushed to the margins of society in the past.”
Testament of Youth is rated PG.
