(Update)

It can be as unifying as our country’s flag.  The jersey that team Canada will wear on the ice in the winter Olympics has now officially been revealed.

Sean Leathong was at the ceremony in Toronto and the details.

We say officially because photo’s of the uniform had been leaked a couple of weeks ago. And Tuesday, it was confirmed that the images we saw are in fact what Canada will wear in Sochi next February.

It’s the new look for the worlds premier hockey team. And it’s just the beginning of a run for gold.

Cheryl Pounder: two time Olympic gold medalist: “It’s unity that the jersey signifies, it’s like sport and the Olympics.”

The look is simple, inspired by the jerseys from the past, canada’s mens, women’s and sledge hockey teams will have three jerseys with a streamlined look

Former NHL forward Joe Nieuwendyk: “They look like fast jerseys to me. It’s just red white and a maple leaf and lets go.”

A lot goes into making a jersey for the premier hockey team in the world. They’re made from recycled water bottles and they’re 15% lighter. But there’s also a gold trim, and that’s no mistake.

Ken Black is with Nike: “Obviously, as the raining gold medal champions, we wanted to respect that and reflect that in these jerseys.”

More than a subtle trim, twelve gold maple leafs sit inside the collar, as a reminder for all who dawn the jersey of Canada’s twelve gold medal wins.

Ken Black: “That’s the last thing they see before the jersey goes on, a history of where they’ve been, and an encouragement to bring some more home.”

There is also new technology in the form of flywire on the collar to provide stability, while reducing weight. But now the work begins.

Bob Nicholson is the President and CEO with Hockey Canada: “Seeing the jersey is a key, a key steeping point for all three teams and there’s a lot of work going in behind the scenes.”

And when the players put these jerseys on in Sochi, like those in the past, it will be something they never forget.

Nieuwendyk: “It’s a little humbling, a little intimidating but a real sense of pride.”

But they’ll know there is a lot to live up to.

Now there are replica jerseys available for about $150 but if you want the real deal, exactly like the players wear, they don’t go on sale until December 5th and those ones cost $450 a pop.
