Niagara police are investigating after a taxi driver was found with a “critical injury” in St. Catharines early Saturday morning.
Officers were called to the area of Eastchester Avenue near Lorne Street for an ambulatory call.
Upon arrival, they found a lone patient who had sustained a critical injury and was transported to an out-of-region hospital for care.
The patient, a 58-year-old man, was determined to be the driver of a gray Toyota Corolla taxi parked nearby.

An investigation determined that a community member was driving in the area when they passed the stopped taxi and discovered the driver lying unconscious on the roadway.
After police and a K9 Unit searched the area, no suspects were found. The taxi was towed from the scene for further examination.
Niagara police have not disclosed the nature of the injury at this time.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the region’s Homicide Unit. Residents and businesses in the area are asked to review all security footage between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday for any suspicious activity.
